Visiting the Boise WaterShed With Kids

I think the Boise WaterShed might just be one of Boise's best kept secrets! It's an incredible place to explore and learn about water conservation and how we can help "protect and conserve our resources" through hands-on indoor and outdoor exhibits, community events, and more. It is the perfect family-friendly adventure for nature enthusiasts of all ages.

The WaterShed does a great job of educating visitors about the importance of protecting our water resources and the environment as a whole. Families can explore various exhibits that creatively explain water cycles, where our waste goes when we flush it down the toilet, conservation practices, and the impact of human activities on local ecosystems. The interactive displays are fun and engaging and really well done.

One of the best things about the Boise WaterShed is its array of hands-on activities that are suitable for children. From toddlers to grandparents, everyone can participate and learn through play. Outside the building there are 2 acres of space to explore. Everyone can get their hands dirty in their nature play trail full of native plants and information about gardening, engineering and art. My boys loved splashing around and getting wet while exploring their simulated river campus. (Great for these hot summer days!) There's also a big cement pipe play area and other hands-on activities to keep kids engages for hours on end!

The WaterShed has regular programming open and free to the public. Events often feature interactive games, art exhibitions, live demonstrations, and guest speakers. This summer they have "Tour Tuesdays" from 9 – 10 a.m. where you can get a tour of the West Boise Water Renewal Facility. According to the website, "this 60-minute walking tour will give you a behind-the-scenes view of what happens when you flush! Learn about how the City of Boise is renewing your used water, recovering valuable resources, and ultimately protecting the health of the Boise River." (Note that closed-toe shoes are required and it's only for ages 5 and up.) Wednesdays are "WaterShed Wednesdays" where they have themed drop-in, all-ages activities, crafts, and scientific demonstrations led by the WaterShed Action Team in the outdoor River Campus from 10-noon. They're a blast and a great way to engage kids of all ages. Every third Saturday of the month they host "WaterShed Weekends" from 10am-1pm. Similar to WaterShed Wednesdays, there are fun hands-on activities that the whole family can enjoy! A Water Renewal Facility tour is offered at 11:30 am. It's all free!

What do you think? Think you'll venture over to the Boise WaterShed with your family soon?
